The cruciate ligaments run inside the joint, where they cross each other and control the movement of the thigh relative to the lower leg. Without this stability, the knee becomes unstable.  <\/p><p>The anterior cruciate ligament prevents the shinbone from sliding forward. The posterior cruciate ligament prevents the opposite from happening.
